Posted 10/03/2017 09:48AM

On Tuesday, September 26, McAuley Social Studies Teacher, Lisa Heiert, volunteered to take part in an Honor Flight to Washington, DC through Honor Flight Tri-State, a Cincinnati-based non-profit organization created to celebrate America's veterans and honor their sacrifices. Honor Flight Tri-State provides veterans age 65 and older with one-day charter flights from the Greater Cincinnati Airport (CVG), allowing those who served the United States to visit the memorials in Washington, DC.

On the flight, Mrs. Heiert served as a guardian to Vietnam Veteran Jerry Dishman, an Air Force Ranger who enlisted at the age of 17 and served three tours. Their flight included 72 veterans, 69 guardians, three medics and several tour guides. The group received a send-off ceremony at CVG in the morning. When they arrived in Washington, DC, they were greeted by crowds who cheered and sang for them. The group received a guided tour through the city and visited the Pentagon, the Air Force Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, National World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. When they returned home to CVG, the group was greeted by hundreds of people, including volunteers, Cub Scout troops and many others, in a special "welcome home" celebration ceremony.

"I am so grateful for the opportunity to travel with Jerry and all of the veterans who were part of this Honor Flight," said Mrs. Heiert. "As a history teacher, it was such an amazing experience to meet the veterans, spend the day with them and listen to their stories; it truly made history come alive. The wonderful treatment the veterans received throughout the flight was unbelievable. It was truly an honor to be a part of the flight, and it is an experience I will never forget."

Honor Flight Tri-State provides honor flights through the generosity of donors. Mrs. Heiert was able to travel on the flight thanks to funds provided by the Northwest Exchange Club.

Honor Flight nationwide has made this dream come true for more than 180,000 veterans since it was launched in 2005. Today, the Honor Flight Network makes these celebration flights from 133 hubs in 42 states. Honor Flight Tri-State serves Southern Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana.
